I have been on an Omnipod for 18 years, and for the last five of those, my CGM was the Dexcom G6. When the G6 was discontinued, I held on as long as I possibly could before switching to the G7 in September 2026. I will be honest: I was hesitant, because of what I had heard about the G7. One night in, I can happily say I am really enjoying it. It is significantly smaller, and the shorter warm-up is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade.

I did not switch because I wanted the newest thing. I switched because the G6 was discontinued and I had to move to something. I used the G6 for as long as I could, and I was nervous about the G7 because of the mixed things I had heard from other users.
Night one changed my mind. The G7 is dramatically smaller on the body, which matters more than it sounds when you wear something 24/7 and sleep, swim, and travel with it. And the warm-up being so much shorter than the G6's two hours means a sensor change costs you a fraction of the blind time it used to.
Phone vs Controller: The Tradeoff Nobody Talks About
I started on the dedicated Controller like everyone else, then moved to my iPhone as soon as the phone app became available. It was a night and day difference. I grew up carrying the poker, the strips, the meter, the pump, the insulin, the needles, all of it. Going to just my iPhone made me feel like I was not even living with diabetes sometimes.
But there is a downside, and it matters for travel: I am now so attached to my phone that I sometimes wish I had just stuck with the Controller. I cannot go for a walk without my phone. It has to be on my nightstand while I sleep. My diabetes tech lives and dies with my phone battery.
For travel, that tradeoff has a concrete consequence: if your phone is your controller, a power bank is diabetes gear, not optional electronics. A dead phone means no pump controls and no CGM readings. If you travel with the dedicated Controller instead, it is one more device to carry and charge, but your diabetes tech stays independent of your phone. Neither choice is wrong. Just make the choice deliberately before the trip, not at the gate.
My Rule for Pod and Sensor Changes Around Travel
I do not schedule my pod or sensor changes around trips. There is no need to overthink the calendar for a normal travel day.
The one exception: if a change is going to fall right before I need to leave for the airport, or mid-flight, I do it the night before instead. Pods and sensors occasionally have issues right after insertion, and I would much rather discover that at home the evening before than in a security line or at 35,000 feet. That single rule has saved me more travel-day stress than any packing list.
Bluetooth and Airplane Mode: A Non-Story (Mostly)
The pod and the sensor talk to each other over Bluetooth, and Bluetooth stays on in airplane mode, so automated insulin delivery keeps working normally during flights. Put your phone or Controller in airplane mode, leave Bluetooth on, done.
In 18 years of pump travel, I have never had a real Bluetooth problem with the pair. Exactly once, I turned Bluetooth off by accident and then realized I was not getting Dexcom readings for about 15 minutes. Turned it back on, everything came back, total non-event. So the honest travel advice is: do not turn Bluetooth off, and if your readings ever vanish mid-trip, check that toggle before you panic.
What the G7 Actually Changes for Travel
Beyond the smaller size and shorter warm-up, the practical travel differences between the G6 and G7 combo are:
- Less to pack and track. The G7 sensor and transmitter are one disposable piece. No separate transmitter to charge, pack, or lose in a hotel room.
- Shorter blind time on changes. A 30-minute warm-up (10-day) versus the G6's 2 hours means changing a sensor mid-trip costs you far less time without readings.
- Longer wear options. The 15-day version means many trips need just one sensor plus a backup, instead of two.
- The overpatch is mandatory. Dexcom includes an overpatch with every G7 sensor and says to use it. Pack a few spares; I learned the hard way that adhesion is the real travel enemy, for pods and sensors alike.

The Combo Packing List
Traveling with the pair means packing for two devices that fail independently. My rule, after 18 years: pack 20% more than the math says you need, and never put any of it in checked luggage. A 5-day trip technically needs 2 pods; I bring 3 minimum, usually 4, each in its own pocket of my bag so nothing gets misplaced.
