What Heat Actually Does
Heat attacks on two fronts. The first is your spare sensors. Heat degrades the sensor chemistry inside the sealed package, and a car interior in summer blows past the 86°F storage ceiling within an hour. A sensor that baked in a glovebox for an afternoon may look fine and fail on day two. You will never connect the two events.
The second front is the sensor you are wearing. Here the news is better. Your body keeps a worn sensor near body temperature regardless of the weather, so ambient heat barely registers for it. The real heat problem on your body is adhesion. Sweat loosens the adhesive faster than anything else, which is why sensors peel off on beach trips and hiking days. What Cold Actually Does
Cold is the mirror image. A worn sensor sits against warm skin under your clothes, so normal winter days and even ski trips do not push it out of range. Body heat does the work for you.
Spare sensors are the concern again. Do not leave them in a freezing car overnight or in an unheated bag on a cold tarmac. The storage floor is 36°F, and an hour in a freezing trunk gets you there.
Then there is the weak link nobody thinks about: your phone. Phones give up in extreme cold long before the sensor does. Screen goes dim, battery percentage collapses, and suddenly your display device is a brick in your ski jacket. Keep the phone in an inside pocket, close to your body, on very cold days. If you own the Dexcom receiver, it tolerates cold better than most phones and makes a solid backup.
Packing for Hot Climates
- All spare sensors ride in your carry-on. Always. Cargo holds freeze and tarmacs bake, so checked luggage is out.
- A small insulated pouch keeps supplies at a stable temperature through long travel days. Sensors do not need refrigeration.
- Dexcom allows fridge storage (36°F to 86°F) but never the freezer. Room temperature is simpler and avoids condensation, so that is what I would do.
- Pack overpatches. Heat plus sweat is the number one sensor killer on tropical trips, and a patch costs almost nothing.
Packing for Cold Climates
- Spare sensors stay insulated in your carry-on, inside your jacket or bag rather than an outer pocket.
- If a spare has been sitting in the cold, let it warm up indoors before you put it on.
- Phone in an inside pocket on bitter days. Bring a portable charger, since cold drains batteries faster.
- Keep your backup meter with you rather than in a cold bag, and keep fast-acting glucose somewhere it will not freeze solid.
