Flying with Medtronic MiniMed: Airport Security Guide

Medtronic's screening rules are stricter than most pump makers. One rule covers nearly everything you need to know, plus exactly what to say at the checkpoint.


If you wear a Medtronic MiniMed 770G or 780G, airport security has one rule that matters more than all the rest: your pump stays away from X-ray and full-body scanners. Everything else follows from that.

Medtronic is stricter here than Insulet, and roughly in line with Tandem. This guide walks through exactly what that means at the checkpoint, how to handle the Guardian sensor, what to say to officers, and how to manage the flight itself.

The One Rule

Medtronic's official airport guidance is direct. The pump must not go through the X-ray machines used for carry-on or checked luggage. And because Medtronic classifies the full-body scanner as a form of X-ray, the same ban covers that machine too.

What is fine: walk-through metal detectors. Medtronic states the pump, infusion set, reservoir, and CGM system can all withstand those.

So your airport routine has exactly two acceptable paths. Walk through the metal detector wearing everything, or request alternative screening and get a pat-down. The body scanner is not on the menu.

Don't just walk through the body scanner. Medtronic's guidance says to remove the pump, disconnect the infusion set, and remove the Guardian sensor and transmitter before a full-body scan. If that sounds like a lot of hassle at 6 AM, that's because it is. Request the pat-down instead and skip the whole thing.

Staying Connected Beats Disconnecting

Read Medtronic's travel card closely and you'll notice the disconnect instructions only apply if you go through the full-body scanner. The far easier move is to never go through it in the first place.

Request alternative screening before you enter the lane. An officer pats down the area around your pump and sensor, does a visual inspection, and swabs your hands for explosive trace detection. You stay connected the entire time. No site changes in the terminal, no basal gaps, no repacking a pump while people queue behind you.

This is also the option TSA expects. Their own procedures say you won't be required to remove medical devices attached to your body, and that alternative screening is available if you don't want a device X-rayed. You're not asking for a favor. You're using the process as designed.

What to Say at the Checkpoint

Before your bags hit the belt, one sentence covers it:

"I wear a Medtronic insulin pump and a glucose sensor. The manufacturer says they can't go through the body scanner, so I'm requesting alternative screening."

Naming the manufacturer helps. It signals this isn't a preference, it's a device requirement, and most officers will direct you to a pat-down lane without further discussion. Medtronic also provides a printable airport information card you can hand over. Keep it in your supply bag.

The Guardian Sensor Follows the Same Rules

The Guardian sensor and transmitter get the same treatment as the pump: fine through metal detectors, not through the body scanner or baggage X-ray. Medtronic's card explicitly says to remove the sensor and transmitter before a full-body scan, or request alternative screening to avoid removing them.

Pack spare sensors in your carry-on, never checked baggage, and ask for hand inspection of spares rather than sending them through the bag X-ray. Infusion sets and reservoirs don't have the same restrictions, but keeping all your diabetes supplies together in one bag makes the hand inspection faster.

Practical tip: Change your Guardian sensor a day or two before departure rather than the morning of. Fresh insertions are when sensors are most fragile, and you don't want to troubleshoot a new sensor in an airport terminal.

In Flight

Once you're past security, Medtronic's guidance is simple: the MiniMed system is suitable for use in aircraft. Keep the pump connected to your body and check your glucose levels frequently during the flight.

Cabin pressure changes can nudge insulin delivery slightly on any pump, so those frequent checks aren't just boilerplate. Keep fast-acting glucose in your seat pocket, not the overhead bin. Drink water through the flight, since dehydration pushes blood sugar up and makes everything harder to read.
